Legendary Inter Milan midfielder Giuseppe Baresi hails Walter Samuel whom he considers as the most underrated member of the treble-winning squad.
Baresi spent the bulk of his playing career serving the Nerazzurri cause. This included unforgettable confrontations with his younger and more famous brother Franco, who was the iconic captain and flagbearer of AC Milan.
The Italian’s association with Inter went far beyond his playing days. He went on to become an assistant coach to a host of Nerazzurri managers between 2008 and 2013. Nowadays, he still serves the club as a scout.
Nevertheless, one of his most memorable periods at the club was between 2008 and 2010, when he acted as an assistant for Jose Mourinho.
That team went on to achieve what no other Inter side had done before, winning the historic treble. This includes the 2010 Champions League title which they won by beating Bayern Munich in the final.
But even more astonishingly, Mourinho’s men famously knocked the seemingly unstoppable Barcelona in the semi-final. Despite being reduced to 10 men due to Thiago Motta’s controversial red card, they somehow managed to cling onto their slim lead on aggregate to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s men. This was the sort of upset that would have earned punters a small fortune on gg.bet where you can place bets on football leagues all over the globe, in addition to the most popular sports in North America, like the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB.
During that epoch, Inter was home to some of the finest players on the globe. This includes the likes of Javier Zanetti, Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Samuel Eto’o.
Giuseppe Baresi Hails Inter Milan Legend Walter Samuel
Thanks to his decisive goals, Diego Milito cemented himself as the treble’s ultimate poster boy. On the contrary, his countryman Samuel never truly hugged the limelight.
The Argentinian was a merciless no-nonsense defender who formed a superb partnership at the back with Lucio.
Therefore, Baresi considered ‘The Wall’ as the one treble hero who went under the radar.
“In Inter’s treble-winning side, I would say Samuel was the most underrated player,” said the former Nerazzurri captain during ‘Raviolata nerazzurra’ event organised by Gigi Furini (via FcInterNews).
“He wasn’t as beautiful to watch as Alessandro Bastoni today, but he was unbeatable and very strong in marking.”
Baresi also revealed which current Inter stars would have made the cut in Mourinho’s famous side.
“Only a few. Barella, Bastoni, Lautaro, Calhanoglu and Dumfries, however, have European calibre.”
